Watching the NBA Finals last night, we were treated to a couple of close-ups of Doc Rivers talking to the floundering Celtics. While unsuccessful at getting his team all fired up, he was able to speak to his team clearly, concisely, and without cursing.

Last fall, I attended a Yale football game and was close enough to the field to hear the coach's pep talk after the first half. I had my young sons with me at the time, and I was shocked at the language used by coach Tom Williams. Frankly, it made me and other parents of young kids nearby quite uncomfortable.

I asked my brother in law about this, as he was a football player, and he told me it was the nature of the game. The stress and intensity of the contest required base and degrading language.

How is it, then, that Doc Rivers can keep his team's attention without resorting to four-letter words? I think that we all could learn from Mr. RIvers' fine example.

This is a video game I can really enjoy with the kids. Most of their games involve driving or running or shooting or something like that, but this one is music that I like (old wannabe headbanger) and playing a pseudo guitar. I play bass, because my old arthritic fingers aren't fast enough for the guitar. What a blast.

So get this: the other day, Zeke is getting ready for bed, and he asks for cookies. These are little cookie monster cookies about an inch on a side, so he can eat several. Here is a recounting of our conversation.

Z: I want cookies
J: How many cookies?
Z: How about six cookies.
J: Well, Zeke, that's too many cookies. What would be a better number?
(pause)
Z: How about NINE cookies?
J: No, what about three cookies?
Z: How about FIVE cookies?

At this point, Rori agreed and I gave him five cookies. I really think, though, that I could have worn him down to four.

So, I called Car Talk to ask about the future of my 1998 Chevy Venture, whose head gasket had blown, and which will cost around $2,000 to repair. the options are these:
1) have it fixed
b) fix it myself
iii) donate it to Maine Public Broadcasting.

They bit, and took my call today. You'll have to tune in to Car Talk between now and two weeks from now to find out their answer, which surprisingly was neither of the above! I'll post a link to the show if it becomes available.

For those who remember, I was also on Michael Feldman's Whad'Ya Know? back in 2001.
Review the Show from 2001 I'm on at the end of the first hour and the beginning of the second hour. It is worth it just to see how I am the FOURTH caller, and I get on the show with a yes or no question. No kidding!

I dusted off the old NRA Certified Instructor credentials, and began a shooting program with my two oldest sons. Arthur will earn his Boy Scout Riflery merit badge with me, and both will begin the NRA Light Rifle qualifications. If they are so inclined, I'll begin them on the 4 position target rifle course.

Both boys are shooting very well.
