In addition to other updates and bug fixes, Microsoft Office 2008 Update 12.2.8 seems to have restored our ability to download images in our email messages.

In an earlier blog post, I had lamented the loss of the "Download Images" link at the top of the email message window. An astute commenter remarked that if you resize the email message window, then the link would magically appear. The link is back to normal after this most recent update.

In truth, I really don't care, though, since I've made the upgrade to Office 2011 and Outlook. Since I now work at Adobe Systems and we use Microsoft Exchange, Outlook is a great way to keep synched with my colleagues. I'll keep Office 2008 around, however, because you never know when you might need it.

While we have lost the ability to selectively download images in messages that end up in our inbox with Entourage 2008 after we apply the 12.2.7 update, it appears that we can download the images if they are in our junk mail folder.

Sometimes.

I was looking through the junk mail folder, and selected a message that I knew had images, and whoop, there it is, the "download images" link. Hooray, I thought, Entourage woke up from its bad dream!

But no, it was too good to last.

I have been unable to see the link since. I wonder if you're given one chance to download the links, and if you don't take it, then tough luck for you. Of course, you are protected both from the bad guys who want to track your emails and also from the folks to whose lists you subscribe. I just wish that Entourage would give me the choice, and not make it on my behalf.

Microsoft pushed down an update (12.2.7) to Office 2008 for Mac yesterday. It purports to close certain security holes, as all updates purport to do, and apparently one of the security holes was related to pictures in email messages.

In previous versions of Entourage, you could enable or disable image download for messages that contained images. This was a simple switch in the preferences, and if you disabled image download, then you could download the images directly from the message by clicking the "Download Images" link at the top of the window.

Now, that link is gone, and has been replaced by a different preference setting. The new security setting provides three options:
Download Pictures:
  • In all messages
  • In Messages sent from Address Book contacts
  • Never
Gone is the option to selectively download images. This is a step backward, because I often receive marketing messages that I want to read, but are no longer readable because of this setting. I can't find a way to restore the option to selectively show images in messages. If anyone knows how to do it in 12.2.7, please let me know!
